Immediately beneath a sink bathtub or other plumbing fixture the fixture drain opening leads to a curved segment of pipe known as the p trap which is normally a 1 1 4 to 2 inch diameter segment of pipe with a sharp curved bend in it shaped like the letter p.

In sinks showers and tubs the trap is just underneath but floor drains may flow horizontally some distance before meeting the gas trap. Imho the reason floor drains are not often used in residential kitchens is that unless the floor is adequately sloped to the drain it can be more difficult to get water into it than to put it into a bucket by wringing out a mop and few people want their kitchen floor to be sloped or pay for the cost of it. When this is the case the drain will have a trap somewhere nearby along the line.
